The Lagos State Police Command has launched a thorough investigation into a viral video showing students from Excel College, Ejigbo, engaging in smoking, drinking, and dancing within a school hostel.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in April 2025 at the boys’ hostel of the private institution, resurfaced online this week, sparking widespread outrage from parents and members of the public, who condemned the apparent lack of supervision in schools.
In response, Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, to take over the case from the Ejigbo Police Division. The division had previously summoned the school’s principal, who also owns the school, for questioning.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the principal confirmed that the students seen in the video had already graduated. However, he assured that the school is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Adebisi noted, “The Commissioner of Police has instructed the SCID to carry out a comprehensive probe. While the students involved have since graduated, the school remains engaged with investigators to clarify the events surrounding the incident.”
The Command emphasized the seriousness of the case, citing its broader implications for discipline and moral standards in schools.
The police urged all school authorities—public and private—as well as parents and guardians, to strengthen oversight and actively guide their children and wards.
“School administrators must not ignore disciplinary issues that could escalate into criminal acts,” the statement warned. “The police will not condone negligence from school authorities. All stakeholders must take responsibility for instilling moral values, proper conduct, and discipline in students. If left unchecked, such misconduct could lead to larger societal problems.”
Adebisi confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and promised that its findings will be made public. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace, order, and safety across Lagos State.
He further appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to collaborate with schools and law enforcement in raising morally upright and responsible young citizens. The police also encouraged the public to continue reporting any suspicious or concerning activities observed in schools.
