Cholera outbreak in Bauchi claims 58 lives, infections rise to 258

A new cholera outbreak in Bauchi State has resulted in 58 deaths and at least 258 confirmed infections, according to official figures released by the state government.

The disease has spread across 14 local government areas, prompting heightened concern over the rapid escalation.

In response, the Bauchi State Government has established a Cholera Steering Committee headed by Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau, as well as a Technical Working Group led by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sani Danbam, to coordinate the response.

During the inauguration of the committees, Jatau stressed the urgent need for coordinated, multi-sectoral action, noting that the outbreak continues to claim lives and strain the health system.

“As of epidemiological week 35, Bauchi State has recorded 258 cholera cases and 58 deaths,” he said, describing the situation as a significant public health concern.

Jatau called on the committees to take the lead in the state’s emergency response, ensuring both immediate containment and long-term prevention in line with the National Cholera Control Plan and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s (NCDC) strategy.

The committee members include representatives from key sectors such as health, environment, water resources, education, agriculture, finance, women affairs, and information. Other stakeholders include the Bauchi State House of Assembly, security agencies, emergency management bodies, development partners, and civil society organisations.
