French media giant Canal+ takes over South Africa’s Multichoice, owners of DSTV and GOtv

Following the completion of its3 billion acquisition by French media giant Canal+, MultiChoice Group (MCG) has announced major board changes and a new financial year-end.

The takeover, now officially concluded, gives Canal+ effective control of the African pay-TV leader — marking the largest transaction in its history and forming one of the biggest media and entertainment companies globally.

According to a shareholder notice on Monday, Canal+ now owns 200,030,591 MultiChoice shares — 46% of the group’s total (excluding treasury stock).

This landmark deal, which recently received final regulatory approval, positions the merged group to serve over 40 million subscribers across nearly 70 countries in Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Combined, the companies will employ around 17,000 people. Canal+ says a full strategic roadmap, including expected integration benefits, will be shared in Q1 2026. For now, billing and subscription processes for MultiChoice customers remain unchanged.
