Obi clarifies Olubadan congratulatory message after public criticism

Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has clarified his congratulatory message to the newly installed Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, following criticism on social media.

Obi had referred to the monarch as “my dear elder brother” in his goodwill message, a phrase that drew backlash for being perceived as disrespectful to Yoruba traditional institutions.

Critics, including ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri and media aide to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, accused Obi of breaching cultural protocol and displaying a lack of respect for traditional authority. Omokri described the message as culturally insensitive, while Olayinka called it a sign of “political arrogance.”

The controversy sparked widespread debate online, with many questioning the appropriateness of Obi’s informal tone toward a revered monarch.

In response, Obi took to his official X handle to clarify that no disrespect was intended. He explained that the phrase “my dear elder brother” is one he commonly uses for respected individuals close to him, including traditional rulers like the Obi of Onitsha.
“I respect protocol and authority and always strive to follow them. My use of that phrase came from a place of goodwill, not disrespect,” he said.

Obi’s statement comes amid national focus on Oba Ladoja’s recent coronation as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, which has attracted widespread congratulatory messages from prominent figures.
