ARISE News Channel has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old news anchor, reporter, and producer, who died during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe District, Abuja on the morning of Monday, September 29, 2025.
In a statement issued by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of ARISE News management, the channel described Sommie—as she was fondly known—as a dedicated journalist, lawyer, and cherished colleague.
“Sommie tragically passed away following an armed robbery incident… She was a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers,” the statement read.
The FCT Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, although no arrests have been made yet. Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh assured the public that efforts are underway to track down those responsible.
The ARISE News Channel expressed its deepest condolences to Somtochukwu’s family, friends, and colleagues, calling for a swift investigation and justice.
“Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” the channel said.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns over rising insecurity in the capital.
