EFCC recovers N853bn crime proceeds in one year

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the recovery of N364.5 billion and $326.5 million in proceeds of crime between 2023 and 2024, describing the figures as unprecedented in the agency’s history.

In addition to these recoveries, the EFCC said it carried out comprehensive oversight of various government intervention funds, including the PL-CNG scheme, NG-CARES, NACA Global Fund, SESET, AMCON loans, and multiple Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) facilities. These include COVID-19 support initiatives and conversion loans with a 15% cover, aimed at ensuring funds are properly utilized and reach their intended targets.

Over the same period, the commission received 15,724 petitions, out of which 12,928 were investigated. This led to the filing of 5,081 cases in court, resulting in 4,171 convictions, while 2,348 cases remain pending.

“These figures are not just statistics; they reflect deterrence, restitution, and a strong message that corruption will not be condoned,” the EFCC stated. The agency emphasized that its operations extend beyond tackling internet fraud to include the protection of national assets and the monitoring of critical public funds.

The commission further noted that all convictions and asset recoveries were achieved through strict adherence to legal procedures and judicial oversight, a commitment it says has helped bolster public confidence in its work.

Highlighting its growing role in safeguarding Nigeria’s financial ecosystem, the EFCC described these accomplishments as a testament to the country’s leadership in the fight against corruption in Africa—particularly at a time when economic sabotage, mismanagement, and systemic graft remain major national concerns.
