High Point of Nigeria’s Participation at UNGA 80

In a political climate where symbolism often overshadows substance, criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s absence from the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) miss the mark. Rather than focusing on physical presence, the emphasis should be on the message delivered and the issues raised on the global stage.

This year’s UNGA, held under the theme “Global Partnerships, Local Prosperity,” provided a key platform for nations to push for reforms, strengthen partnerships, and advocate for a more inclusive global order.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, delivered Nigeria’s national statement on September 24, powerfully articulating Nigeria’s stance on major global issues.

Among the core messages President Tinubu conveyed were:

  • UN Security Council reform, with a call for permanent African representation
  • Nuclear disarmament
  • Fair access to global trade and finance
  • Debt relief for developing nations
  • Climate justice and sustainable development

These themes are consistent with President Tinubu’s ongoing advocacy at various international fora, including:

  • The 78th UNGA in 2023 (which he personally attended)
  • COP28 in Dubai (2024)
  • The 79th UNGA in 2024
  • The Non-Aligned Movement summit in Kampala, Uganda

President Tinubu’s unwavering focus on these issues reflects his commitment to global peace, economic justice, and Africa’s rightful place in global decision-making.

In an increasingly volatile world—with conflicts in Gaza, trade inequalities, and rising tensions globally—Nigeria’s voice, vision, and values must continue to resonate. And whether through his direct presence or a trusted representative, what matters most is what Nigeria says and what it stands for.
