Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has announced a ₦500 million endowment fund for victims of pre-election violence in the state.
Adeleke made the announcement on Wednesday while receiving his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission following his re-election as governor.
According to his Special Assistant on Digital Media, Olalekan Badmus, the fund was established by the Osun State Government in honour of victims who lost their lives or were affected by violence recorded ahead of the governorship election.
The Adeleke family will also provide full scholarships up to university level for children of those who died in the violence.
The beneficiaries, according to Badmus, will be selected across political party lines, with a special committee chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, responsible for verification and compilation.
Adeleke described the initiative as a humanitarian intervention, stressing that eligible victims would not be discriminated against on the basis of political affiliation, religion, ethnicity, gender or social status.
The governor also called for unity among residents following the governorship election, urging both his supporters and those who backed other candidates to work together toward the development of the state.
He said the election and campaign were over, stressing that the focus should now shift to governance, reconciliation, healing and development.
The announcement comes after Adeleke was declared winner of the August 15 governorship election, securing victory in 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas.
