Hundreds of flights across the United Kingdom have been delayed or cancelled following a technical fault at NATS, the country’s air traffic control provider.
The disruption affected major airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Luton, Edinburgh and Bristol, with nearly 1,000 flights reportedly affected as airlines struggled to manage delays and cancellations.
NATS said it had implemented a fix and that its flight systems were beginning to recover. However, airlines including Ryanair and Wizz Air called for urgent reforms, with Ryanair urging NATS Chief Executive Martin Rolfe to resign over repeated disruptions.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority said it expects a full report on the incident and will consider whether further action is necessary to improve the reliability and resilience of the country’s air traffic control system.
