Aisha Wahab has made history by becoming the first person of Afghan descent elected to the United States Congress.
The California state senator won the special election for the U.S. House seat previously held by Eric Swalwell, who resigned earlier this year.
Wahab, a Democrat, previously made history as the first Muslim and first Afghan American elected to the California State Senate.
She will serve the remainder of Swalwell’s term, while she and her Republican? opponent, Melissa Hernandez, are also set to face each other in the November election for a full congressional term.
Wahab’s victory marks another milestone for Muslim and Afghan American representation in U.S. politics.
