The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has commenced a statewide traffic enforcement operation aimed at reducing reckless driving, preventing road accidents and ensuring strict compliance with traffic regulations across the state.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Uyo.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, said he would personally supervise the exercise to demonstrate the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, promoting responsible road use and enforcing existing traffic laws.
The enforcement operation will focus on major traffic violations, including one-way driving, excessive speeding, the use of covered or concealed vehicle registration plates, illegal operation of motorcycles on restricted routes and other offences that pose risks to public safety.
CP Azare described the initiative as a proactive measure to restore order on the roads, minimise avoidable crashes and ensure the safety of all road users across Akwa Ibom State.
He warned that motorists found violating traffic laws would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner, however, reassured law-abiding residents that the exercise is not intended to harass members of the public but to encourage compliance with traffic regulations and promote a safer driving culture.
He called on motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcycle riders and other road users to cooperate with officers participating in the exercise and obey all traffic rules.
Azare expressed confidence that greater compliance with traffic regulations would significantly improve road safety and help protect lives and property throughout the state.
