Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger protection, inclusion and improved access to healthcare services for persons living with albinism, urging Nigerians to uphold their rights, dignity and wellbeing.
In a message marking the 2026 International Albinism Awareness Day, commemorated globally on June 13, Mrs Tinubu highlighted the persistent discrimination, stigma and health challenges faced by persons with albinism, stressing the need for collective action by government, institutions and society.
The First Lady noted that this year’s theme, “Demanding Our Rights: Protect Our Skin, Preserve Our Lives,” underscores the importance of raising awareness about the healthcare needs, rights and overall welfare of persons living with albinism.
She expressed concern over the heightened risk of skin cancer among persons with albinism due to prolonged exposure to sunlight and limited access to essential healthcare services and protective resources. According to her, many still struggle to obtain sunscreen, protective clothing, routine skin examinations and treatment services necessary to safeguard their health and improve their quality of life.
Mrs Tinubu further called on Nigerians to promote inclusion, equal opportunities and respect for persons living with albinism while working collectively to eliminate discrimination, prejudice and social stigma.
She reaffirmed the need for sustained advocacy and support to ensure that persons with albinism can live healthy, productive and dignified lives in society.
