Algeria and Morocco have secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil after reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Algeria made history by booking their place at the global tournament for the first time, coming from behind to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in their quarter-final clash. Morocco also sealed their ticket after beating defending champions South Africa by the same scoreline.
Under the WAFCON qualification format, the four semi-finalists automatically earn places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Two more African teams will join them after the remaining quarter-final fixtures.
Cameroon will face Nigeria, while Malawi take on Ghana, with the winners of both matches securing automatic qualification.
The defeated quarter-finalists will have another opportunity through the FIFA Play-Off Tournament. Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa will face off in a play-off on August 13, with the winner advancing to the 2027 World Cup alongside another team from the remaining quarter-final losers.
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil.
