Rabat, Morocco – January 6, 2026: Algeria booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals with a dramatic 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in their round of 16 encounter at the Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium.
The decisive moment came in the 119th minute when 22-year-old substitute Adil Boulbina, representing Al-Duhail, netted the match-winning goal. Released on the left, Boulbina advanced into the penalty area and unleashed a powerful strike, sending the 18,837-strong crowd into celebration. The goal marked a career milestone for Boulbina, who made only his second tournament appearance off the bench.
“I have always dreamed of representing my country,” said Boulbina. “I had my chance today, scored, and most importantly, helped the team advance to the next round.”
Algeria, winners of the 2019 AFCON, continue their unbeaten run, having won all their group-stage matches, and are now poised as strong contenders for a third continental title. DR Congo coach Sebastien Desabre praised his team’s effort but acknowledged the disappointment of exiting the tournament.
In the other round of 16 tie, Nigeria demonstrated their attacking prowess with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Mozambique in Fes. Victor Osimhen scored twice, with Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams contributing further goals, ensuring the Super Eagles’ progression to the quarter-finals.
The stage is now set for a highly anticipated quarter-final clash between Algeria and Nigeria in Marrakesh on Saturday, promising an exciting encounter between two of Africa’s football powerhouses.
