The Anambra State Government has commenced the dredging and clearing of the Ikenga Waterway in Awka as part of efforts to improve drainage, tackle flooding, and strengthen environmental management in the state capital.
The project, being executed by the Anambra Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), focuses on reopening the waterway, which drains into the Ezu River through Agu Awka in Awka South Local Government Area.
Speaking on the initiative, the Managing Director of ACTDA, Ossy Onuko, said a swamp buggy has been deployed to dredge the channel and remove debris and other obstructions hindering the natural flow of water.
He explained that the intervention is designed to restore the drainage system’s capacity to effectively channel stormwater, particularly during the rainy season, thereby reducing the recurring incidents of flooding and erosion in Awka.
According to Onuko, the project will improve stormwater flow, minimise erosion, and safeguard lives, property, and critical public infrastructure.
He added that the initiative reflects the Soludo administration’s commitment to sustainable urban development, environmental protection, and the delivery of resilient infrastructure across the Anambra Capital Territory.
