The Nigerian Army has expressed concern over the low number of recruits from the South-East, with Anambra Staterecording just 117 applications out of 38,000 nationwide.
Brigadier General Uche Nnabuihe disclosed this during a youth sensitisation campaign in Awka, noting the figures were recorded before a nationwide awareness drive began.
He explained that the initiative is aimed at encouraging more young people from the region to apply for the 91 Regular Recruits Intake ahead of the May 27 deadline, stressing the need to address the imbalance in enlistment.
Nnabuihe highlighted the benefits of joining the Army, including a structured career path and opportunities for national service.
Also speaking, Lt Col. Ogbemudia Osawe said training capacity has improved, with new facilities established in Abakaliki and Osogbo to accommodate recruits.
He outlined additional benefits such as career advancement, steady income, military education, specialised training, healthcare for families, pensions, and chances for international assignments.
Meanwhile, Ifeatu Emodi, Permanent Secretary of the state’s Ministry of Youths, attributed the low turnout to misinformation about the Army and called for a change in perception.
Traditional ruler Igwe Michael Okeke-Uche also urged youths to enlist, citing improved welfare and the need for stronger regional representation in the military.
