The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has renewed its demand for the release of withheld salaries and the resolution of outstanding welfare issues affecting university lecturers.
ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, made the call during a briefing at the union’s secretariat at the University of Jos, Plateau State.
Piwuna urged the Federal Government to urgently implement outstanding provisions of the December 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, saying this would help restore confidence among lecturers and promote stability in Nigeria’s public universities.
He stressed that improved funding, infrastructure and staff welfare were essential to strengthening teaching, research and learning.
Beyond the university system, Piwuna called for broader economic reforms, urging governments to prioritise job creation, poverty reduction, agriculture, industrial production, social protection and research.
He also called for stronger measures against corruption and financial leakages, alongside a tax system that places greater responsibility on wealthy Nigerians to support national development.
On education, ASUU advocated a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s education system, with greater emphasis on technical education, innovation, research, agriculture and skills development.
The union urged the Federal and State Governments to address funding and infrastructure challenges in public universities, insisting that unresolved welfare issues must be tackled to achieve sustainable reforms.
With the 2027 elections approaching, ASUU also urged Nigerians to scrutinise the policies and programmes of political parties and candidates, particularly their plans for education, employment, poverty reduction and economic development.
