At least one person has died and 25 others are missing after a boat carrying migrants sank off the Greek island of Gavdos, near Crete.
The Greek coastguard said 51 people were rescued after two vessels in the area responded to the incident. Survivors reported that 77 people were on board when the boat sank.
Search and rescue operations are continuing, with four ships, boats, Frontex aircraft and a coastguard helicopter deployed to the area. Strong winds have, however, hampered the operation.
The rescued migrants are expected to be taken to Crete, where authorities will begin the relevant procedures.
Gavdos and Crete have become major entry points for asylum seekers travelling from North Africa to Greece, amid continued efforts by European authorities to curb irregular migration across the Mediterranean.
