Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing worsening physical and mental health, bringing an early end to his term, which was due to expire in 2028.
The 76-year-old president, popularly known as “Chuppu,” confirmed his resignation on Friday, saying he could no longer effectively carry out the responsibilities of the presidency due to his deteriorating health.
In his resignation letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Shahabuddin said his declining condition made it impossible to continue serving in the country’s highest constitutional office.
A close ally of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Shahabuddin was elected president in 2023 with the backing of the Awami League. Following Hasina’s removal from office during the 2024 student-led uprising, he faced growing calls to step down.
His resignation comes months after he denied allegations that he held a phone conversation with the ousted premier while receiving medical treatment in London.
