A young British couple and their Greek pilot have died in a helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos, according to Greek police.
The couple, newlyweds Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, were reportedly on their honeymoon when the private Bell 206 helicopter crashed just metres from a landing pad on Monday.
The couple are said to have travelled by helicopter from Markopoulo, near Athens, to the popular holiday island.
Greece’s aviation safety authority said it had launched an investigation into the crash, with investigators expected at the scene to gather evidence and speak with witnesses.
The UK Foreign Office said it was providing consular support and was in contact with Greek authorities.
Cromie worked at investment firm Blackstone, while Ebert was a senior specialist at consultancy firm Bain & Company. Both companies expressed shock over the deaths and offered condolences to the families.
A senior Greek police official told the Times that the crash occurred shortly before the helicopter’s scheduled landing time of 18:15 local time.
Sifnos Deputy Mayor Manolis Foundoulakis, who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, said there was almost nothing left of the aircraft.
