The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has doubled the winners’ prize money for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) from $1 million to $2 million, marking the second consecutive year of a 100 per cent increase.
CAF also increased the tournament’s total prize fund by 67 per cent, from $3.475 million to $5.8 million, ahead of the expanded 16-team competition scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 25 to August 16.
Under the new prize structure, the runners-up will receive $750,000, while every participating team will earn $150,000 in participation fees, up from $125,000 in the previous edition.
CAF said the latest increase reflects its continued commitment to developing women’s football across Africa, noting that since the current leadership assumed office, the winners’ prize has risen by 900 per cent, from $200,000 to $2 million.
Record 10-time champions Nigeria will compete in Group C alongside Zambia, Egypt and Malawi, while hosts Morocco headline Group A. The tournament will be staged in Rabat and Casablanca, with the four semi-finalists qualifying automatically for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
