Canada booked a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Estaquio’s stoppage-time strike sealed a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in their Round of 32 clash at California Stadium on Sunday.
The Canadian midfielder fired home from just outside the box in the second minute of added time, securing Canada’s first-ever appearance in the World Cup Round of 16.
In the first competitive meeting between the two nations, South Africa enjoyed more possession, but Canada created the clearer chances throughout the contest. Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a superb display, making five crucial saves to keep his side in the game.
South Africa threatened early through Hugo Broos’ men, but Canada soon took control, with Cyle Larin and Jonathan David both denied by the impressive Williams before halftime.
After the break, Thapelo Maseko tested Maxime Crépeau with a curling effort, while Jacob Shaffelburg was again thwarted by Williams at the other end.
As extra time loomed, South Africa slowed the tempo in a bid to extend the contest, but Canada struck at the death. A deflected cross fell kindly to Estaquio, who calmly drilled the ball into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters.
The victory makes Canada the first CONCACAF nation to win a FIFA World Cup knockout match since 2002. They will face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the Round of 16, while South Africa’s impressive World Cup journey comes to an end.
