The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has retained the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), the country’s benchmark interest rate, at 26.5 per cent following the conclusion of the 306th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Abuja.
Announcing the decision on Tuesday, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso said the committee opted to hold the rate steady after assessing both domestic and global economic conditions. He noted that while Nigeria’s economy continues to show resilience following recent structural reforms, persistent geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, remain a threat to global energy prices and domestic inflation.
The decision followed a two-day meeting of the MPC held on July 20 and 21, 2026, during which members reviewed key economic indicators before unanimously voting to maintain the current monetary policy stance.
