Canadian music icon Celine Dion has made a triumphant return to the stage, breaking down in tears of joy as she performed her first full concert in six years in Paris following a prolonged battle with Stiff Person Syndrome.
The 58-year-old singer opened the sold-out show at the Plenitude Arena with her French-language classic “On ne change pas,” performing before about 30,000 fans. Visibly emotional, Dion told the audience she was delighted to see them, describing her journey back to the stage as more difficult than expected but saying she had held on to hope.
Dion’s return marks a remarkable comeback after the rare neurological disorder, which causes severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms, forced her to cancel performances and raised uncertainty over whether she would ever perform again. She revealed her diagnosis in 2022 and has since undergone intensive training, including ballet, Pilates and voice therapy, to rebuild her strength and prepare for a return to live performance.
The Paris concert is the beginning of a 26-date residency, with 16 shows scheduled for September and October and another 10 planned for May. Thousands of fans travelled from different parts of the world to celebrate her comeback, while tributes and fan events were held across Paris ahead of the performance. Over her four-decade career, Dion has sold an estimated 260 million albums in English and French, cementing her status as one of the world’s best-selling music artists.
