The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has called for an independent investigation into the controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) and urged the immediate suspension of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, pending the outcome of the probe.
In a statement issued on Sunday, CHRICED’s Executive Director, Comrade Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, said the allegations linked to the PFIPC have raised serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and governance in Nigeria.
The organisation was reacting to claims by the self-acclaimed Director-General of the PFIPC, Adeniyi Adeyemi, who alleged that Gbajabiamila facilitated his appointment “at a price.”
Describing the allegation as serious, CHRICED said it warrants a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation to establish the facts and uphold public confidence in government institutions.
The group argued that the controversy reinforces concerns about growing opacity in public administration and the need for stronger institutional accountability.
CHRICED also referenced concerns raised in the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) 2026 Article IV Consultation Report, which highlighted discrepancies between government expenditure and official budget records. It called on the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office to provide further clarification on the reported unrecorded spending. The Federal Government has since denied allegations of off-budget expenditure.
The organisation further expressed concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, noting that persistent cases of kidnapping, banditry, and violent crimes continue to erode public confidence in government.
Among its recommendations, CHRICED called for:
The immediate suspension of Femi Gbajabiamila pending the conclusion of investigations.
The establishment of an independent investigative panel comprising civil society representatives, anti-corruption experts, and jurists.
The publication of details of all government-linked councils, committees, and intervention bodies, including their mandates, funding, and operational structures.
Renewed commitment to transparency and accountability in public governance.
The organisation also urged civil society groups, the media, labour unions, religious organisations, youth groups, and other stakeholders to remain vigilant and continue demanding accountability from public office holders.
According to CHRICED, a transparent investigation into the PFIPC controversy is essential to strengthening public trust in government institutions and ensuring that anyone found culpable is held accountable in accordance with the law.
