Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, will remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) after a Kaduna State High Court adjourned ruling on his bail application to the first week of June.
Justice Darius Khobo adjourned the matter on Tuesday after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence in the case, which involves an amended nine-count charge bordering on alleged fraud, abuse of office, and corruption.
The ICPC had earlier amended the charge, making El-Rufai the sole defendant in the case.
During proceedings, the prosecution opposed the bail application, arguing that granting bail could allow the former governor to interfere with ongoing investigations.
The court subsequently ordered that El-Rufai remain in ICPC custody pending the ruling on his bail application.
Counsel to the defendant, Ukpong Akpan, disagreed with the court’s position, describing it as unjustified and suggesting it was influenced by the assumption that his client could interfere with investigations due to his former office as governor.
He further argued that the case carries political undertones, although he insisted the defence would continue to pursue legal remedies through proper judicial channels.
Akpan also urged supporters of the former governor to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that legal battles often involve both setbacks and progress.
The case has now been adjourned to the first week of June for ruling on bail and continuation of proceedings.
