Twenty-three people have died from suspected diphtheria in Plateau State over the past two weeks, as health authorities intensify efforts to contain the spread of the infectious disease.
The Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Nicholas Baamlong, disclosed that 143 suspected cases have been recorded during the period. He said affected patients are receiving treatment in isolation as authorities work to prevent further transmission.
The state government has also stepped up public awareness campaigns across communities, working with traditional rulers and other stakeholders to educate residents on prevention, early detection and the need to seek prompt medical attention.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with health officials as efforts continue to bring the outbreak under control.
