Messaging platform Discord has suspended its livestreaming and video call features in Brazil following an order from the country’s data protection authorities.

The move comes after a teenage girl was allegedly encouraged to take her own life during a livestream hosted on the platform, raising concerns over the safety of young users.

Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) ordered Discord on August 12 to suspend its livestreaming services, citing concerns that the platform had failed to put adequate safeguards in place to protect children and teenagers.

The regulator gave the US-based company until Monday night to comply with the directive.

Discord confirmed that it had complied with the order, temporarily restricting the affected features for users in Brazil.

The development highlights growing regulatory scrutiny of social media and messaging platforms over child safety, online content moderation and measures to protect minors from harmful interactions.
