Nigeria’s opposition parties risk handing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) another electoral advantage in 2027 if they fail to resolve their internal divisions and agree on a common strategy.
Political Analyst, Akin Fatunke gave the warning on Lagos Television’s The Conversation . Speaking on Road to 2027 – Political Developments Shaping Nigeria’s Future. Fatunke who explained that the opposition’s failure to demonstrate genuine cohesion could weaken its chances of mounting a serious challenge to the APC said Nigeria’s political landscape remains heavily influenced by ethnic and religious considerations, rather than clear ideologies and policy positions. Fatunke also pointed to differences among leading opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, over major economic policies such as fuel subsidy reforms and the Naira’s flotation.
According to him, opposition parties must return to a “factory-setting level” and be willing to sacrifice individual ambitions if they hope to present a credible alternative to the APC. He argued that the emergence of a single candidate and a unified platform would give the opposition a stronger chance against the APC’s extensive grassroots and legislative structures.
Fatunke also urged politicians to focus on issues affecting Nigerians, including insecurity, inflation and the slow pace of economic recovery. He cautioned against promises that complex national problems could be solved within a single four-year term, urging political parties to present clear manifestos centred on security, institutional reform and poverty reduction.
He warned that without greater political cohesion and a credible policy direction; the 2027 elections could deepen Nigeria’s existing socio-political divisions instead of producing meaningful solutions to the country’s challenges.
