Dozens of soldiers have been arrested in Niger following a failed coup attempt in the capital, Niamey, posing a fresh challenge to the military government led by General Abdourahamane Tiani.
The attempted takeover reportedly involved younger soldiers frustrated by worsening militant violence and the deteriorating security situation, particularly in southwestern parts of the country. The development prompted heightened security measures as government forces moved to regain control of key areas in the capital.
The coup attempt was eventually contained by forces loyal to the military government, with several soldiers arrested following the failed takeover. The incident has raised fresh concerns about possible divisions within Niger’s armed forces and the junta’s ability to tackle persistent jihadist violence.
Authorities have since tightened security across Niamey as investigations continue into the failed coup. The development represents another challenge for Tiani, who came to power following the 2023 military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
