The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has risen to 2,011, according to health authorities.
A total of 4,381 confirmed cases have been recorded across five provinces, making the outbreak one of the fastest-growing Ebola outbreaks ever reported.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, was officially declared in May 2026.
According to the World Health Organisation, there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for the strain.
The latest figures bring the outbreak close to the DRC’s deadliest Ebola outbreak, recorded between 2018 and 2020, which claimed nearly 2,300 lives.
