The Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) are reportedly investigating allegations that some senior officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) may have engaged with foreign interests in ways considered capable of undermining Nigeria’s national security.
A security source cited by Vanguard said the agencies intercepted communications involving some NFF officials and foreign nationals, prompting the joint investigation.
The source clarified that the probe goes beyond the N17 billion intervention fund approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024 to clear outstanding payments owed to Nigeria’s national teams, noting that financial impropriety falls under the purview of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The development comes amid mounting criticism of the NFF over the performance and management of Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The NFF executive committee, led by Ibrahim Gusau, is also facing pressure following the resignation or reported consideration of resignation by several members.
The alleged probe could further heighten uncertainty around the NFF board election scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
