The Edo State House of Assembly has elected Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko Edo Constituency I, as its new Speaker following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku.
The change in leadership was announced during Monday’s plenary, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Osamwonye Atu, after the House formally acknowledged Agbebaku’s resignation.
Following the announcement, Sunday Ojiezele, representing Esan South East Constituency, nominated Idiaye for the Speakership. The nomination was seconded by Eric Okaka, representing Owan East Constituency.
The Clerk of the House subsequently administered the oath of office on Idiaye, who assumed leadership of the House.
The Assembly also approved changes to the majority caucus leadership following a letter from the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ojiezele was nominated as Majority Leader, while Ojie Inegbebor, representing Igueben Constituency, was nominated as Deputy Majority Leader.
The lawmakers further approved the nomination of Natasha Osawaru as the new Minority Leader following a letter from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The latest developments have ushered in a new leadership structure in the Edo State House of Assembly, with Idiaye now presiding over the eighth Assembly.
