The Edo State House of Assembly has rejected the resignation of its former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, and declared him impeached, eight days after he announced his resignation from office.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, had resigned as Speaker on August 17, 2026, amid an alleged threat of impeachment by his colleagues.
Following his resignation, the House suspended him indefinitely and removed the Majority Leader, Jonathan Ibhamawu, and Deputy Majority Leader, Addeh Emankhu Isibor, from their positions as principal officers.
The lawmakers subsequently elected Hon. Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, as the new Speaker.
However, during Monday’s resumed sitting, Idiaye said an impeachment notice against Agbebaku had been signed by 17 of the 24 members of the House.
He explained that the notice was formally presented by the Majority Leader during the previous Monday’s plenary, arguing that Agbebaku’s resignation had effectively been converted to an impeachment because it was neither officially presented nor documented before the House suspended him.
The Speaker subsequently declared Agbebaku impeached, maintaining that he did not resign from office.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Sunny Ojiezele, thereafter moved a motion for the formal impeachment, which was seconded by Hon. Ahmed Waziri.
The House also directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession and warned that security agencies would be engaged if he failed to comply.
