Former Tropical Storm Edouard has weakened into a tropical depression after making landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border, but the system continues to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds and the risk of flooding to parts of Texas.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Edouard made landfall with maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph (95 km/h) before losing strength as it moved inland. Forecasters, however, warned that the system could continue producing heavy rain through Wednesday, with rainfall totals of 3 to 7 inches (8 to 17 centimetres) and as much as 12 inches (30 centimetres) possible in some areas.
The storm caused disruptions across southeastern Texas, with downed trees, flooded roads and non-functioning traffic signals reported in Beaumont. About 32,000 utility customers in Jefferson County, which includes Beaumont, were also without electricity as strong winds and heavy rain affected the area.
Meanwhile, tropical activity remained elevated in the Pacific, with Hurricane Lowell, Tropical Storm Marie and Hurricane Karina also being monitored by forecasters. Officials warned that Lowell could generate dangerous surf and marine conditions around Hawaii, while Marie was expected to strengthen into a hurricane.
