The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has alleged that the much-publicised Nigeria Air aircraft unveiled in Abuja in May 2023 was not a functional national carrier but a plane chartered from Ethiopian Airlines for a three-day display.
Testifying before the Federal Capital Territory High Court, EFCC investigator Christopher Odofin stated that the aircraft arrived from Addis Ababa on May 27, 2023, for a ceremonial unveiling and departed back to Ethiopia on May 29, shortly before the end of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
According to court testimony, the aircraft remained on the ground for a static display wearing Nigeria Air branding, while Ethiopian Airlines personnel operated the flight. The EFCC further alleged that the branding was removed before the aircraft returned to Ethiopia after less than 72 hours.
The revelations emerged during the ongoing trial of former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika, who is facing charges alongside three others over alleged abuse of office and the misappropriation of more than ₦2 billion in public funds.
The anti-graft agency also presented documents and evidence relating to consultancy contracts connected to the Nigeria Air project, alleging irregularities in the award and extension of contracts linked to associates of the former minister.
The case has been adjourned until June 17, 2026, for further hearing.
