The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, following his recent conviction over financial misappropriation linked to major power projects.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede confirmed that Mamman was apprehended in Kano at about 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday after weeks of intelligence surveillance.
According to the anti-graft agency, Mamman was convicted on all 12 counts related to the alleged diversion of over ₦33 billion meant for the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric power projects.
The Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier sentenced the former minister in absentia to a combined 75 years imprisonment after finding him guilty of money laundering and financial misconduct.
Justice James Omotosho ruled that Mamman deliberately avoided court proceedings in an attempt to frustrate the administration of justice.
The EFCC described the arrest as a strong signal of the Federal Government’s commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring accountability for public funds.
Authorities also disclosed that two individuals allegedly shielding the former minister were arrested alongside him, while investigations into the property where he was found are ongoing.
