The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly placed one of the Osun State Government’s accounts with First Bank on a “Post No Debit” restriction, just 10 days before the state’s governorship election.
The affected account is said to be used for the payment of workers’ salaries.
The development came shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke alleged that the anti-graft agency was planning to freeze the accounts of the state government and some top officials ahead of the August 15 governorship poll.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the governor described the reported move as an attempt to disrupt government activities, insisting that the EFCC has no legal authority to freeze state government accounts.
A source close to the state government confirmed that the account had been restricted, adding that Governor Adeleke would address the public on the matter.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official statement explaining the reason for the account restriction.
