The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lifted the restriction placed on the Osun State Government’s accounts following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The accounts, held with First Bank of Nigeria and Zenith Bank, are now reportedly operational after the commission vacated its Post No Debit order.
The EFCC had restricted transactions on the accounts on August 5 amid an investigation into the alleged mismanagement of about ₦11 billion in Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee.
The action generated controversy, with concerns raised over its timing ahead of the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.
President Tinubu subsequently directed the EFCC to lift the restriction, describing the situation as embarrassing. The development was confirmed by a Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, who said the directive had been implemented.
Following the unfreezing of the accounts, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke directed the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to withdraw the legal action filed against the EFCC.
