The European Union (EU) announced on Tuesday its plan to donate €1.5 million to assist victims of the recent crisis in Yelwata, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benue State, and other affected areas across Nigeria.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, made this announcement during a joint press conference held in Abuja with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Welfare.
Mignot emphasized the EU’s commitment to Nigeria, stating, “The European Union remains a dedicated partner to Nigeria. In a rapidly changing world where many alliances are being re-evaluated, we aim to be a dependable and consistent ally—one that fulfills its promises and supports Nigeria in unlocking its development and prosperity potential.”
He further highlighted ongoing efforts to find lasting solutions for people in need of humanitarian aid and urged both public and private sectors to work together in tackling humanitarian challenges.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, expressed appreciation for the EU’s support. He pledged that the EU’s donation, along with contributions from other development partners, would be directed toward rebuilding the lives and livelihoods of affected communities.
