The Catholic Church in Nigeria is mourning the passing of Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City and former President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), who died on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the age of 69.
His death was announced by the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Fr. Michael Banjo, describing the late Archbishop as a devoted shepherd whose ministry was marked by unwavering commitment to the spiritual growth and holistic development of the faithful.
The Secretariat highlighted Archbishop Akubeze’s remarkable leadership in the Archdiocese of Benin City, where he championed pastoral care, strengthened Church institutions, and promoted developmental initiatives. It also praised his dedication to the formation and welfare of priests, emphasizing his belief that the future of the Church depends on well-trained and spiritually grounded clergy.
Reflecting on his tenure as President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, the Church noted that Archbishop Akubeze remained steadfast in defending Catholic doctrine and upholding the truth with courage and conviction. His episcopal motto, “Ut Testimonium Perhibeam Veritati” (“That I may bear witness to the Truth” – John 18:37), reflected the values that defined his ministry.
The Secretariat further described him as a humble, compassionate, and selfless leader whose quiet disposition, patient listening, and dedication to service earned him the admiration of both clergy and laity.
