The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed that normal flight operations have resumed at the temporary international terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following a flooding incident that briefly disrupted activities.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the flooding was caused by drainage disruption associated with ongoing construction works at the airport.
According to him, the situation was quickly brought under control through established contingency measures, ensuring that passenger safety was not compromised and no flights were cancelled.
“The flooding was localised and linked to ongoing construction activities affecting drainage. The situation was promptly managed through established operational contingency measures. No flights were cancelled, and passenger safety was never compromised,” Agbebire said.
The incident occurred after heavy rainfall on Sunday flooded several parts of Lagos, including sections of the airport’s temporary international terminal.
As a precaution, FAAN temporarily suspended operations at the affected facility and relocated airlines including Air France-KLM, Ethiopian Airlines, and Fly Gabon to Terminal Two while engineers addressed the drainage challenge.
Agbebire explained that the flooding was significant enough to disrupt terminal operations, necessitating the temporary relocation of affected carriers.
He confirmed that all airlines have since returned to the temporary international terminal following the restoration of normal operations.
FAAN also disclosed that it has commenced additional measures to strengthen the airport’s drainage infrastructure to reduce the risk of similar incidents during the rainy season.
The authority said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and prioritise drainage improvements to ensure uninterrupted airport operations.
