The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has confirmed five cases of diphtheria from 15 suspected cases investigated in the territory, with two deaths recorded.
The administration said several patients had been treated and discharged as it intensified efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent further transmission.
The Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, FCTA, Adedolapo Fasawe, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja during a community sensitisation and advocacy programme in Karshi.
Fasawe said an Incident Management Team had been deployed to Karshi and surrounding communities to trace contacts, administer preventive antibiotics and strengthen disease surveillance.
The team is also engaging residents in Hausa, Gbagyi and other local languages to raise awareness and encourage early reporting of suspected cases.
