The Federal Executive Council has approved the acquisition and deployment of two next-generation High-Throughput Communication Satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B, to expand Nigeria’s satellite capacity.
The project is expected to strengthen the country’s communications infrastructure and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on foreign satellite systems.
NIGCOMSAT’s Acting Head of Corporate Affairs, Stephen Kwande, disclosed the approval on Saturday, saying it moves the project into its next phase of implementation.
The satellites will be delivered by Thales Alenia Space of France and Israel Aerospace Industries, with NIGCOMSAT leading the implementation in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
The initiative is expected to enhance Nigeria’s capacity in satellite communications and support the country’s growing digital economy.
