The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the first comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) since the scheme was established 53 years ago, marking a significant shift towards a skills-driven and youth empowerment-focused programme.
The far-reaching reforms are designed to reposition the NYSC from its traditional military-led structure into a modern, civilian-led initiative aimed at improving youth employability, fostering entrepreneurship, and contributing to national economic growth.
Among the major changes approved is the transition of the scheme’s operational leadership from the military to a civilian administrator. While the military will no longer oversee day-to-day operations, it will continue to provide security support during orientation camps and other NYSC activities.
The council also approved a redesigned six-week orientation programme that will place greater emphasis on leadership development, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and practical skills acquisition, replacing the existing orientation model.
As part of the reforms, corps members will now be assigned to one of 11 specialised career streams, including Technology, Education, Agriculture, Medical and Health Services, among others. The initiative is intended to provide targeted training and improve participants’ readiness for the labour market.
The new framework also introduces a technology-driven deployment system aimed at improving the safety and security of corps members while ensuring more transparent and risk-sensitive postings across the country.
Additionally, primary places of assignment will now be aligned with corps members’ academic qualifications, professional skills, and career aspirations, ensuring they gain relevant work experience during their service year.
Another notable change is the replacement of the traditional passing-out parade with a formal graduation ceremony that recognises corps members based on the skills and competencies acquired during their service year.
The reforms also include the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform to reflect the scheme’s new identity as a professional, innovation-driven national service programme.
The overhaul represents one of the most significant policy shifts in the history of the NYSC and is expected to better prepare Nigerian graduates for employment, entrepreneurship, and national development.
