The Federal Executive Council has approved major healthcare infrastructure projects worth hundreds of billions of naira, including a N302.3 billion National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) centre.
Health and Social Welfare Minister, Professor Ali Pate, disclosed this after Wednesday’s FEC meeting at the State House, saying the approvals are part of efforts to strengthen specialised healthcare infrastructure across the country.
The council also approved several projects to upgrade the National Hospital, Abuja, to a quaternary healthcare institution, including N64.92 billion for modular clinics and a theatre complex, N103 billion for a new hospital wing and N69 billion for a Neuroscience Institute.
The Neuroscience Institute will provide specialised services in neurosurgery, radiology, interventional procedures and rehabilitation.
Pate said the new NICRAT facility, which has a 36-month completion timeline, will strengthen Nigeria’s capacity for cancer research, treatment, innovation and professional training.
