The Federal Government has warned that the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway could be shut within two weeks if motorists and other road users fail to comply with safety measures and conditions along the route do not improve.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, issued the warning on Monday during an inspection tour of the highway.
Dare said the directive followed concerns over persistent safety breaches, vandalism and other illegal activities along the road. He explained that the decision was taken on the instruction of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, amid growing safety concerns.
According to Dare, the government would have no option but to close the section if there is no significant improvement within the two-week period.
He noted that the government has an alternative route in the Lekki-Epe Expressway, adding that the coastal highway remains under construction and was not originally intended to carry traffic before the completion of its bridges.
The Federal Controller urged motorists and other road users to adhere strictly to safety guidelines and avoid activities that could endanger lives or compromise ongoing construction work.
