The Federal Government has approved a significant increase in hazard allowances and other earned benefits for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in federal universities, with the new remuneration package taking effect retrospectively from January 1, 2026.
The approval was conveyed in a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) following an agreement reached between the Federal Government and NASU on June 29, 2026.
Under the revised package, senior non-teaching staff on CONTISS 6–15 will receive an annual laboratory hazard allowance of ₦486,000, up from ₦360,000, representing an increase of ₦126,000. Staff on CONTISS 1–5 will see their annual hazard allowance rise from ₦180,000 to ₦243,000.
The government also approved the implementation of a Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance and reviewed several earned allowances for eligible non-teaching staff across federal universities.
Responsibility allowances were also increased for senior officers. Registrars and bursars will now receive ₦840,000 annually, while directors will earn ₦600,000 annually. Deputy registrars, deputy bursars, and deputy directors will receive ₦480,000 annually, with improved allowances also approved for heads of departments, units, and sections.
In addition, the Federal Government reviewed allowances for field trips, industrial supervision, teaching practice, and the Students Work Experience Programme (SWEP). It also introduced an annual ₦80,000 uniform and protective wear allowance for laboratory, workshop, and studio personnel across all eligible salary grades.
The circular further stated that the Provision Tools Allowance has been merged into the new Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance, while the existing Excess Workload Allowance will be phased out in line with the new remuneration framework.
The revised package follows months of negotiations between the Federal Government and NASU and is aimed at improving staff welfare, addressing rising living costs, and sustaining industrial harmony in Nigeria’s federal university system.
