The Federal Government has commenced the demolition of the ageing Carter Bridge in Lagos to pave the way for a new 1.93km bridge estimated at N548.98 billion.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, said repeated technical assessments conducted in 2013, 2019 and under the present administration found the existing bridge too deteriorated for rehabilitation, particularly its underwater foundations.
The replacement project, awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, will feature a flyover ramp and two 105-metre navigational waterways, aimed at improving connectivity between Lagos Island and the mainland.
The government said the new bridge is expected to enhance safety, ease traffic congestion and provide a more sustainable transport link for Lagos residents and businesses.
