The Federal Government has expressed its condolences to the government and people of the People’s Republic of China following the deadly landslide that struck Tanchang County in Gansu Province.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria mourned the loss of lives caused by the disaster and extended its sympathies to the families of the victims, the injured and all those affected.
The government also commended the swift response of Chinese authorities and emergency teams in carrying out rescue operations and providing relief to impacted communities.
Reaffirming the strong bilateral relationship between both countries, Nigeria said it stands in solidarity with China during the difficult period and expressed confidence in the country’s resilience as recovery and rehabilitation efforts continue.
The ministry prayed for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives, the speedy recovery of the injured and comfort for bereaved families.
The landslide, which struck Dangchang County in Gansu Province on Tuesday, claimed at least 21 lives after burying dozens of people. Chinese authorities have since concluded search and rescue operations and allocated reconstruction funds to support affected communities.
The tragedy came amid severe weather conditions across parts of China, where heavy rainfall and flooding have also resulted in additional casualties and widespread damage.
